The public uproar over Facebook's recent privacy changes has me a bit puzzled. After reviewing the changes on my own profile page, I've determined that the only elements that you can't change back to the way settings previously were, are your employment, education, and birthdate information. There are several solutions to this problem if you don't like your work, personal, and education info on display.
1) Find a better job.
2) Apply to and enroll in a better college.
3) Delete all information you don't want public.
4) Continue to lie about your age, like you know you already do in person.
5) Stop complaining and adapt.
Facebook has changed their internal settings several times since its inception. I have only been a member for three-ish years, but I can safely state:
1) I enjoy Facebook
2) Its SOCIAL media, i.e. by design, an inherently public activity
3) even with the new changes, it still beats the goobery pants off of MySpace
True, it does take about three and a half minutes to change back the privacy settings on your photo albums so they are only viewable by friends. Ok, four minutes if you have a great many albums. But, really people, FOUR minutes of your time for this enjoyable, FREE website?
In closing, to those of you who gave your money to Diaspora or plan to leave Facebook for another social media site, I have a few words: that's just super adorable, so totally cute. I love your guts, kid, but GET REAL.
Facebook is here to stay. 500 million registered users. How many humans can even accurately pronounce the word "diaspora?" And doesn't it seem to trivialize the plight of Jewish people leaving Palestine to compare leaving Facebook to the wholesale disenfranchisement of an entire ethnic community?
Given the public outcry, I would not be surprised if some settings do change back. This would only further serve to illustrate my point. The world changes and people adapt, or they don't and the world passes them by. Charles Darwin would have relished this debate.
